More Processing Experiments

4D, 2009-03-10 14:49:53

I've spent quite a lot of time experimenting with Processing now and I've finally had a breakthrough. Processing has the ability to make calculations or changes on individual pixels.

One very useful attribute is the ability to measure the brightness of each individual pixel. By measuring the brightness of each pixel I can then create an array of data which can be used for a multitude of things. For example I could change the shape of the image based on the brightness or change the colour based on the brightness.

Now that I have figured out how to collect this array of data, I just need to use it in someway.

Experiemnts

I've spent the past few days experimenting with Processing and I've come to the conclusion that it will be ideal for what I want to simulate. Processing has very good support for capturing real-time video and its possible to make changes to the video at a pixel level.

So far I've managed to get real-time video into Processing using a webcam. With the video I've then been able to do simple things such as changing the colour of the image.

I will post again when I've made any significant breakthroughs.

Deconstructing Dimensions

Having looked at Flatlands and the way each dimension is broken down to shapes, such as cubes and squares, I have decided to produce an interactive visualisation which will deconstruct an image into these separate dimensions. The aim is to produce a visualisation that will try to simulate how an object would appear in each dimension.

I'm not too show how it will work at the moment and how I will go about visualising each dimension. I've been playing around with Processing and I know that its capable of real-time visualisations using camera feeds. So I will see what I can produce with Processing.

Flatlands

I've been reading Flatlands by Edwin A Abbott and it has inspired me to create a visualisation based on the theories proposed in Flatlands.

Plot

Flatlands is a story about a 2D world known as Flatland. The protagonist is a 2D square that guides the reader through life in a 2-dimensional world. One day, the square is visited by a three-dimensional sphere, however the square cannot comprehend the sphere as in Flatland a sphere becomes a circle. However, the sphere takes the square to the third-dimension (Spaceland) and from there the square is able to see the sphere as a 3d object.

Once the square has returned to Flatland, he proposes the idea of a fourth-dimension in which a 3d cube with 8 points becomes a 4d cube with 16 terminal points.

"In One Dimension, did not a moving Point produce a Line with TWO terminal points?

In Two Dimensions, did not a moving Line produce a Square with FOUR terminal points?

In Three Dimensions, did not a moving Square produce—did not this eye of mine behold it—that blessed Being, a Cube, with EIGHT terminal points?

And in Four Dimensions shall not a moving Cube—alas, for Analogy, and alas for the Progress of Truth, if it be not so—shall not, I say, the motion of a divine Cube result in a still more divine Organization with SIXTEEN terminal points? "

I found an image which illustrates the dimensions as described by Flatlands:

Idea Change

My original idea was to create an interactive installation which would simulate various physical effects and time theories such as time dilation and the Terrel effect.

However, after researching various time effects I have come to the conclusion that they will be too difficult to simulate. I also think that my approach is too literal and instead I need to look at producing something more abstract or with a strong critical context behind it.

One idea would be to visualise an alternative dimension or reality. The product would again take the form of a real-time visualisation, however it would not be a simulation and instead a more artistic visualisation. This would allow me to be creative with the visualisation and maybe produce something that looks visually stunning.

I will post more once I've decided on what to visualise and the context behind my ideas.
